Stretch Your Neck

Cut the excuses and stretch your neck!

Lately I’ve found myself having to explain the importance of stretching your neck after any workout.

WHY? Well… Did you realize your trapezius muscle (commonly referred to as your “traps”) runs from your mid-back all the way up to your neck?

Have you ever noticed that when you’re running you keep your head back, chin tucked and shoulders back? Or how about when you’re lifting weights and rack the bar over your shoulders, or when you’re lifting with any muscle group: what is your neck doing? It’s engaging muscles to keep your posture upright.

If you suffer with an achy neck, sore shoulders or tension in the neck and you’re physically active, it’s very possible that you have been neglecting neck stretches.

Now, if you’re reading this and thinking, “I don’t have time to do neck stretches!” I’m here to tell you that’s a poor excuse, and yes you do!

The answer to your problem lies in combining stretches after a workout.

For example: You’re holding a quad stretch: your right hand is holding your right ankle and your left arm is holding the wall to balance. Now, tilt your head to the left and hold that at the same time. Repeat on the other side.

Or you’re stretching your arm across your chest to lengthen out your back muscles. Now turn your chin inwards towards your armpit and now you’re performing a rotation stretch. Repeat on the other side.

It doesn’t need to be complicated or time consuming, but it will really make a difference if you incorporate the neck stretches into your routine. This is EXTRA important if you’re lifting heavy weights.
